Comments

  1. As a former classmate of Chris Clarke’s, I had to comment on his segment this week.

Listening to Chris talk about the proposals he has been writing and comparing them to the communications plans we wrote in school had me flashing back to those very lessons on communications/strategic plan writing.

I think it’s important for PR students to know that while learning how to write plans and proposals, they will receive conflicting information from all professors. There will be one professor teaching that the plans need to be 10-20 pages minimum in order to be thorough enough. Then there will be another teacher saying that the plan can’t be longer than 5 pages or else it’s too long. The reality is, everyone must be willing to learn all over again when they enter the “real world” and begin writing for bosses and clients.

I think Chris is right in his thinking that if it’s taking to long to write, it will take too long to read. That also had me flashing back to what we learned on day one: know your audience. One style of writing won’t be applicable to all clients.

Thanks Chris for being so open while sharing your experiences as an entry-level employee. Also, thanks to Terry and Dave for continuing to include topics relating to PR students and graduates in your podcast. It has been a great resource for me, and I have truly appreciated your insights.
